LISSNER PARK

Public BBQ

Tucked just a minute's stroll from Charters Towers' main street sits this delightfully eccentric patch of Queensland greenery, where a century-old rotunda presides over proceedings like a dignified grandfather at a family barbecue. The park's magnificent shade trees offer blessed relief from the outback sun, though you'll share the canopy with colonies of fruit bats - a uniquely Australian touch that somehow adds rather than detracts from the charm. The fenced dog park proves surprisingly well-appointed, complete with agility jumps and thoughtfully provided waste bags, while families spread out across lawns that seem almost impossibly green for this climate. Children feed cooperative geese near small ponds (though recent maintenance has left these looking rather forlorn), and the whole scene feels perfectly suited to demolishing fish and chips from town - apparently the local shop produces batter that "melts in your mouth." The toilets are clean, the benches plentiful, and there's even a modest animal enclosure, though its best days appear behind it. Still, for a free respite in historic Charters Towers, Lissner Park delivers exactly the sort of unhurried Queensland experience that makes you wonder why anyone rushes anywhere.
